Broom Making Problem: Jamalpur

-By Gunjit Arora

DEFINING THE PROBLEM STATEMENT:
Broom making in India is a process which is still carried out by hand and this team has concentrated mainly on two types of brooms based on the material from which it is made:
1. Brooms made from coconut leaves.
2. Brooms made from Assam grass.
Still, broom making involves the use of crude and traditional hand tools and almost every process involved in this process in carried out by hand, leading to a number of injuries which also affects the efficiency and hence the productivity. The major problems faced by the people involved in the process are:
 Friction burns.
 Cuts.
 Musculoskeletal problems due to repeated wrist, hand and leg movements and improper posture for extended periods of time.
 Effect of these problems on productivity.

After studying and understanding every process, the following
1.TYING OF THE BROOM:
The process of tying of the broom is carried out 2-3 times in the entire process of making a broom. This process is done by winding a metallic wire on the palm and then in swift motions, tying it on the broom and at the end, lopping it through the rear end of the broom to provide strength, prevent loosening of the wire, and to ensure that the user is not injured in the process. However, this entire process results in multiple cuts, friction burns on the palms.
2.TYING THE RIBBON AROUND THE BROOM:
This process involves wrapping a colored ribbon on the broom, to mark the handling area, where the broom is to be held, and also to protect the user from fine fibers that sometimes protrude from the stalks. This is mostly done by women, who grip the broom with feet and roll it back and forth to wrap the ribbon around the broom.
3TRMMING OF BROOMS:
Trimming of brooms is done to ensure that there are no lose fiber and also to give it a better appearance. However, the uneven surface, and heavy cutting knife(made of MS, weighing a little more than 1kg ) make this a laborious effect.
FIELD ANALYSIS:
Talking to the various people involved in broom making, we have recognized that the above stated problems are which effect them the most.
The people also expressed the need for an alternate machine/tool for these processes which would prevent injuries and at the same time not affect the efficiency.
These broom makers have followed the traditional methods that have been passed down from generations without trying to do anything much different.
Ideas:

2. The second idea is to construct a working table like a sewing machine where we can wind the metal wire around the broom and
cut it rather than jerking it with the hands. The problem is with the clamping and rotating technique and it would require a good deal of mechanism because holding lots of sticks together and rotating them is not that easy.
3. For trimming purpose of broom:
