Day 5: Detailed Highlights

-By Nirali Kansara and Mansi Singh

DAY 5 (9TH JUNE, 2015) OF SUMMER SCHOOL

The students presented their observations and reports individually on the places they visited and the problems they observed and the possible solutions they can work on. Professor Anil Gupta was present to give feedback and insights on their ideas and solutions. He emphasized on the fact that the design that you think of should consider the user’s flexibility. Also, see where you can use existing solutions. Always be sceptical about your ideas. Put your dilemma more explicitly. Maximize your uncertainty, only then you will be able to traverse into unknown solutions. Sometimes we try to solve the whole problem, but forget about the small problems which might be significant. Don’t present too broad problems, because then it will be difficult to solve them. ‘Is’ should not become ‘ought’. He also explained the concept of cash compulsive economy; that is when consumption is more than income. He told that the students have to consider that a large number of households are perpetually deficit. Lots of poor people are not able to subsist. So for them, think of a regular income whose flow will be cyclical.

Once the presentations were done, the students were given time to ponder over the suggestions that were given to them, and decide a problem that they would like to take up for the rest of the summer school. They were told to prepare a check list for their field visit which they were going to take the next day.

Later, in the evening, the students formed groups according to their interest and prepared a check list for the field visit next day.
